An Estonian Hacker who was involved in the $9.4M scheme of WorldPay Hack now sentenced to 11years in prison.
In 2008, Sergei Tsurikov and his team mates got unauthorized access to the systems of RBS WorldPay-the US payment processing division of RBS, based in Atlanta.
The team successfully compromised the data encryption system which was used by the firm to process secure payment to its employees and after that the hacking group raised limits on targeted accounts, and used its network of cashiers to withdraw more than $9 million from around 2,100 ATMs worldwide, from Hong Kong to Estonia using counterfeit payroll debit card.
The teams mates were told to keep 30-50% as their shares and then to transfer the remaining to Tsurikov who was monitoring the ATM Transactions from inside WorldPay's system.
The total hack was done in less than 12 hours and then they tried to destroy data on the processing network to hide their tracks.
In addition to his 11 year sentence, Tsurikov must follow the time served with three years of supervised release. He has also been ordered to pay restitution totaling $8.4 million, according to the FBI.
Back in August 2010, Tsurikov was extradited to the U.S. from Russia to face hacking charges related to the WorldPay hack. In September 2012, Tsurikov pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and computer intrusion.
“A leader of one of the most sophisticated cybercrime rings in the world has been brought to justice and sentenced,” said United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates in a statement. “In just one day in 2008, an American credit card processor was hacked in perhaps one of the most sophisticated and organized computer fraud attacks ever conducted. Almost exactly one year later, the leaders of this attack were charged. This prosecution was successful because of the efforts of the victim, and unprecedented cooperation from various law enforcement agencies worldwide.”
