India Tops the List of DDos Attack Originating Country with 26% Rate

India is in the top of list of the countries which originate DDos Attack, mainly on Gaming, Software and media sectors. The rate of attack according to Cyber Security Firm Symantec is 26% which is biggest. The report is based on the collection of global data between January and August of this year.

Distributed Denial of Service or generally known as DDos  is a method of making a network or website unavailable by sending excessive packet request to the server from multiple sources, called Bots. As a result of that, the server  becomes unavailable for the time the attacker wants it to retain.

In the list US stands second with rate of 17% followed by Singapore, Vietnam, China.

"The sources for DDos attacks are often countries that have a high number of bot infected machines and a low adoption rate of filtering of spoofed packets" Symantec India Technology Sales Director  Tarun Kaura Said.

Though India tops the list but it does not mean that attackers are from India. In most cases attacks are performed remotely. So it is needless to say that Indian users attacked by some kind of software that made them bots for performing DDos Attack.

"However it is a reflection of India, emerging as a hotbed to launch this attacks, potentially because of the low cyber security awareness, lack of adequate security practices and infrastructure", Tarun added.

In today's world you can easily buy DDos services for as low as $5. For long time attack, you have to pay larger amounts of money. There is also monthly subscription available. According to Tarun, this type of service are generally used by Gamers to take down competitors.

Among all technological fields Gaming world uses it most with rate of 46% followed by software and media sector.

Tarun also gave hint that there will be one when DDos attacks will be performed from Mobile and Internet of Things devices though this is not common now.

Whether it is used to take down your Gaming rival or Business Rival, this kind of use of such a big hacking weapon is generally foolish. According to report of Q2 2014 DDos Attack,

Compared to the second quarter of 2013
  • 22 percent increase in total DDoS attacks
  • 72 percent increase in average attack bandwidth
  • 46 percent increase in infrastructure (Layer 3 and 4) attacks
  • 54 percent decrease in average attack duration: 38 vs. 17 hours
  • 241 percent increase in average peak bandwidth
Compared to the first quarter of 2014
